Saskatchewan Library Hosts Live Dungeons & Dragons Events

What began as a once-a-month gathering at a small-town Saskatchewan library has turned into one of its most attended programs: live, collaborative Dungeons & Dragons sessions for all ages.

The Prairie View Public Library started the campaign series in 2022, initially attracting a handful of curious teens and fantasy fans.

Today, over 40 participants gather every other Saturday to roll dice, role-play characters, and dive into a homegrown fantasy world created by volunteer game masters.

Library coordinator Rina Paulsen says the popularity surprised everyone. 'We thought it would be niche—but it’s become a community anchor.'

The sessions are open to all, with materials provided for beginners and guidance from experienced players who help ease newcomers into the imaginative world of D&D.

Several families attend together, and participants range in age from 9 to 67. 'I came to watch my grandson play. Now I’ve got a half-elf rogue named Jeff,' said one retiree.

Beyond fun, the program promotes literacy, cooperation, and confidence. Paulsen says she’s seen shy kids open up and blossom at the table.

The library has since added world-building workshops, miniature painting sessions, and a summer one-shot campaign for visiting students.

Plans are underway to expand the program regionally through a shared campaign universe across library branches in southern Saskatchewan.

For Paulsen, the magic is simple: 'When people sit at a table and tell stories together, that’s real community-building—whether it’s dragons or prairie towns.'
